On March 3-4, the scientific workshop “Human well-being in the Arctic in a changing climate” was held in Nadym (Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, Russia) with the participation of SecNet.
The representatives of other organizations also took part in this workshop. Among them International Network for Terrestrial Research and Monitoring in the Arctic INTERACT, The Interregional Trade Union of Gazprom, Administration of the municipality Nadym district, Mandatory Medical Insurance Fund (Nadym branch), Center for Medical Prevention, Nadym, Moscow State University, Tomsk State University, University of Tyumen, Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute. The reindeer breeders of Nadym, Yamal, Taz and Krasnoselkupskij districts also took part in this workshop.
Participants of workshop discussed the concept of a new research project concerned the impact of climate change on the indigenous people of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. Scientists are especially interested in studying the aspects such as health, anthropogenic activities, economic and social well-being of the people living in Arctic. It is planned to involve the native population in this project to gathering the empirical data.
Perhaps, indigenous people will photograph extreme weather and natural phenomena. Then they will describe how it affects the health and daily life of reindeer breeders, and send the data to the Arctic Research Center for further data processing.
Participants of workshop developed the proposals for building the Nadym Integrated Stationary Arctic Reference Observations Network based on the water-basin principle for monitoring the Arctic environment.
Probably, SecNet together with INTERACT will make a fundamental contribution to this project and ensure gathering the data outside the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District.
