Historical and Regional Geology
About the program
The program provides a deep natural science education in the field of stratigraphy, paleontology, regional geology, geodynamics and environmental geology. The ability to conduct scientific research and solve production problems is formed with the participation of students in basic research conducted by departmental laboratories, and also during research placements in leading geological organizations and institutions.
The competitiveness of the program is ensured by the teaching staff’s high level of professionalism and academic links with both domestic and international researchers.
Aim of the program. The main aim of the Master’s programme is the preparation of highly-qualified specialists:
- who have deep knowledge of biological diversity, the history of fossil development, stratigraphic aspects of research, the laws of manifestation of different geological and anthropogenic processes, minerageny of mineral deposits, and the essence of the lithosphere’s ecological functions; and
- who are able to carry out complex paleo biogeographical and climatic reconstructions, and predict the development of the biosphere in the future; apply stratigraphic methods for solving various geological problems; identify general patterns of certain regions’ historical development; draw geological maps to identify the conditions for the formation and laws of metallic and non-metallic minerals’ deposit locations; analyze and predict geological processes, including the formation of mineral deposits in different geodynamic conditions caused by movements of lithospheric plates; analyze and predict geo-ecological and geological processes, including those which influence and determine the conditions for living organisms’ existence in different regions.

Lecturers
The specialized departments of TSU’s Faculty of Geology and Geography provide an education based on the "Historical and Regional Geology" program. The students who are enrolled in the program take part in the projects of scientific research laboratories at the Siberian Paleontological Scientific Centre of Geological and Geophysical Modeling. We use the modern equipment of the Faculty’s Centre for Collective Use, named the Analytical Centre of Geochemistry of Natural Systems, and modern software (GIS, GGIS and GFD). In addition, the scientific and research work of students is carried out at the geological polygons of Shira village (Republic of Khakassia) and Shestakovo village (Kemerovo Region).
Areas of activity of graduates:
- Scientific research activity;
- Project-exploratory activity;
- Teaching activity;
- Entrepreneurship.
The graduates of the Master’s program "Historical and Regional Geology" are in demand for work in geological, project, mining and environmental companies of Krasnoyarsk Territory, Kemerovo, and Tyumen regions, the Far East, and the countries of the CIS which are situated close to Tomsk.
