Migration studies

The Program is aimed at comprehensive, practice-oriented training of highly qualified specialists in the field of migration (including transnational), who are in demand both on the Russian and international labor market.

The main goal (mission) of the master’s program is to train specialists with fundamental knowledge and special competencies in the field of migration processes, migration policy and integration of migrants who possess modern methods of data collection and analysis and who correctly interpret the results and are able to apply them in practical work.

About Program

The Program is aimed at comprehensive, practice-oriented training of highly qualified specialists in the field of migration (including transnational), who are in demand both on the Russian and international labor market.

The main goal (mission) of the master’s program is to train specialists with fundamental knowledge and special competencies in the field of migration processes, migration policy and integration of migrants who possess modern methods of data collection and analysis and who correctly interpret the results and are able to apply them in practical work.

Prospective employers

Graduates of the program will have sufficient competencies and knowledge to continue their postgraduate studies at any Russian university or research institute, as well as research master’s and PhD programs at foreign universities in such areas as anthropology and ethnology, sociology, political science, history and international relations.

Graduates of the program will be able to work in state and municipal authorities; international organizations; non-commercial, public organizations (national-cultural autonomies and associations, etc.); commercial structures (consulting, expertise, etc.); research and analytical centers; universities and academic institutions.

Study Program

Basic disciplines:

  • Migration theories in the social sciences

  • Migration processes: past and present

  • Ethics and logic of social sciences

  • Methodology of modern sociological research

  • English for Migration studies

Compulsory disciplines of the variable part:

  • Scientific and research seminar «Migration, citizenship, nationalism and ethnicity»

  • Migration Policy and Migration Management

  • Legal regulation of migration

Disciplines for choice

 

The educational program includes the following types of practices:

  • scientific and research work (including compulsory field work within the program profile);

  • organizational and management (educational);

  • pre-diploma.

A special feature of the program is the qualitative language training of students (courses “English for Migration Studies”, “Languages and culture of the countries of Central Asia and China”).

Additional opportunities

Students of the program can participate in:

  • Projects of the Laboratory for Social and Anthropological Research at the Tomsk State University;

  • Projects of the Network for Ethnic Monitoring and Early Warning of Conflict (EAWARN) of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the Russian Academy of Sciences;

  • Projects of the Laboratory of Historical and Political Demography of the Irkutsk State University.

Application and admission

Applicants entering the program must have a diploma of higher education.

State-funded places: 10 places. Studying on contract base is possible.

Admission to the program is carried out on a competitive basis following the results of admission tests:

  1. Interview on the program profile;

  2. Proof of knowledge of a foreign language: knowledge of English and Russian languages (no lower than B2 level). You will be expected to demonstrate actual language competence during entrance examinations (certificates are not required).
