4 th SecNet International Workshop on Climate Change Started Its Work on 1 st October
The 4 th SecNet International Workshop on Climate Change "Siberia in a Global Context. Interaction
between the Arctic and Southern territories of Siberia under conditions of a rapidly changing climate:
environment and local communities” started its work on the 1 st of October.
Scientists from Norway, Sweden, England, and SecNet partner universities took part in the event.
The workshop was opened by Ludmila Borilo, Executive Director of CAE TSSW Siberian Institute of the
Future, and Sergey Kulizhsky, Vice Rector for Social Affairs, TSU.
SecNet Coordinator Olga Shaduiko outlined achievements of the network and addressed the issues of
community development strategy.
The main event of the day was a lecture by Terry Callaghan, professor of TSU and the University of
Sheffield. The lecture was dedicated to sustainable development of Siberia and support of indigenous
peoples living in the macroregion.
Then the lecturer sparked a discussion on global warming and an important role of the local people in
collecting empirical data for climate change studies. The round table was moderated by Sergei Kirpotin,
TSU professor and director of BioClimLand Excellence Centre.
